The ThermaCAM GasFind IR LW Sees Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6)

The introduction of FLIR System (Hongkong) ThermaCAM gasFind IR gas leak detector has allowed companies to incorporate infrared into their leak detection and repair programmes (LDAR) providing a far quicker and more efficient method than traditional toxic vapour analysis.
This success has led to further product development and the introduction of an infrared camera specifically for detecting greenhouse gasesthet are not visible in the mid-wave infrared band; Sulphur hexafluoride and anhydrous ammonia are typical examples. This new camera is the ThermaCAM GasFind IR LW. It is based on the standard model but as its suffix suggest it operates in the longwave infrared band.
Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) is a relatively expensive man-made chemical released by electrical substations where it is used as an electrical insulator in equipment that transmits and distributes electricity. It is also used as a cover gas in the magnesium industry, in the manufacture of semiconductors, for thermal and sound insulation, as a tracer gas for vebtilation efficiency and in medical applications. Although Sulphur hexafluoride is extensively recycled leakage is still a concern. excessive exposure can harm human health and of the internationally monitored greenhouse gases it has, by far, the greatest global warming potential- 23,000 times that of CO2. This gas is included in the European Pollutant Emission register, a vast database that catalogues European industrial pollution. It requires affected industrial plants to indentify leaks from a range of 50 pollutants that they emit into the air or water in quantites over a given threshold. The ThermaCAM GasFind IR LW allows plant managers to see, and hence, reduce the emission of SF6 with ease. Although the detection of Sulphur hexafluoride is a key selling point for this new camera it is not by any means the only gas that it can detect. It is designed to see a wide range of other gases too including anhydrous ammonia tha is widely used as a refrigerant in large cold-storage facilities.
The new ThermaCAM GasFind IR LW actually shows any leakage point or points of SF6 gas in real time. It can detect small leaks from several metres away and big leaks from hundreds of metres away and in trials has proved able to see leaks that have eluded a traditional active laser system. In addition to making leaks visible, the camera is able to scan large areas quickly, greatly increasing inspection speed and improving overall plant safety. It can also be used without stopping any operation or process

Determination of Melamine in Food by Ion Chromatography

Metrohm has released a simple and accurate method for the determination of melamine in milk powder and other food using ion chromatography after inline sample dialysis. The new method requires only moderate spending on instrumentation and is sensitive enough to quantify melamine content well below the limits set by food safety regulatory authorities around the world.
Melamine is an industrial chemical in the production of resins, which are used in laminates, glues, adhesives, and plastics. It has won a sad notoriety as an illict adulterant to simulate higher protein levels in milk powder and other food.
The new method to detect melamine contamination in food relies on the high accuracy and sensitivity of the 884 UV/VIS Compact IC, Metrohm's all-in-one system for the spectrophotometric determinatin of polar subtances, anions, and cations. Sample preparation is perfectly convenient due to Metrohm's patented inline sample dialysis. This kind of Metrohm inline sample preparation effectively eliminates the organic matrix. The new metrohm IC application work on the determination of melamine in food by ion chromatography can be downloaded at www.metrohm.com

Analyser Measures CO2 at High Pressures

A new sophisticated gas analyzer that measure carbon dioxide (CO2) under pressure extremes has been developed by Sensor Electronics (USA).
CO2 dilutes explosive concentrations of ethylene oxide (EtO) in, for example medical equipment sterilizers and research laboratories. (EtO is both toxic and extremely flammable). Because of inter molecular energy transfer between EtO and CO2 (and nitrogen, oxygen, H2O) under pressure, accurate CO2 measurement is virtually impossible. Unlike erratic readings with conventional CO2 detectors, this new analyzer ignores the transient extreme to give precise CO2 measurement through the cycle.
The analyzer uses twin source-to-sensor pulsating infrared beams, thus eliminating mirrors/lenses/splitters, and problem with dust, dirt, condensation, contamination and misalignment. It also shrugs off temperature and humidity extremes. Self-correction circuitry means the analyzer can work for years without fussy adjustment or recalibration.
The analyzer even keeps a watchful eye on itself, flashing immediate warning of any internal problems, then spelling out what wrong where. The unit Link up with printers, plotters, loggers and computer to make a permanent record of fast-changing CO2 values

New Optical Fire Monitoring for Waste Disposal Facilities

The unique fire and explosion hazards in municipal and industrial waste disposal facilities has led Spectrex (USA) to provide its explosion-proof SharpEyw 40/401 Optical flame detector to protect these facilities. The new SharpEye 40/40 series flame detector offer enhanced reliability and durability with an extended 5 year warranty. All are fitted with heated window to withstand the harshest of conditions, HART output to offer quality information during installation or maintenance. Most have an enhanced detection distance and larger field of view than before.

All these detector are hazardous area approved (FM/ATEX/IECEx/CSA and more) for location in zone areas and 3rd party performance approved. The outdoor storage areas for waste bales (residential waste) which are often stored at high locations experience fires due to the spontaneous heat accumulation of the waste or ignition of hazardous materials such as flammable liquids or gases in the waste. The waste bales are packed in polythylene foil, which is usually difficult to ignite; however smoldering fires tend to spread from inside the bales and, if not detected in time, may cause large fires and sometimes explosion due to gaseous pocket within the waste storage area.

Positioning optical flame detectors along the edge of the waste pit enables continuous monitoring of the waste pit over large areas of bulky refuse storage. A typical fire protection system consist of infraredfire sensor located on the pit ceiling or along its parameter edge, fire extinguishing equipment on the upper part of the wall, a fire monitoring panel, fire extinguishing equipment control and operation panels in the trash bunker crane operation room, and water supply source including a pump and piping.

In the case of large pit bunkers, the fire location is identified at a very early stage by the unique triple infrared (IR3) 40/401 fire detector and the water monitor is automatically directed at the fire source according to the fire location information. In the case of smaller pits, when a fire is detected and its location is indentified, water is immediately discharged from the water discharged nozzle locally onto the location or in the entore area
